UP WITH THE GODS: THE FIRST CLASS SLEEPERS...

FLYING used to be simple. You paid for first class and flew in luxury, paid for business and were able to sleep or paid for economy and suffered. But then airlines such as Virgin Atlantic, Continental, Delta and Air Canada broke the mold with combined business/first cabins and sold the seats at business class fares. Their superior products forced the competition to join in the game by creating their own two-class cabins or revamp their existing business classes. As the resulting business classes became increasingly comfortable and sophisticated, three-class carriers then had to substantially improve their first-class products to justify the premium price.

INDUSTRY LEADERS such as Air France, British Airways, Qantas, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, All Nipon Airlines, Korean Airlines, Lufthansa, United Airlines and American Airlines overhauled their front cabins and installed sleeper seats with pitch ranges of 82 to 95 inches, leaving the best of the combined business/first classes (Delta, Continental, Alitalia, Air Canada and Virgin Atlantic) a bit behind.
